Description
Description:
This sword is a customer consignment piece. He purchased it from one of his Marine Corp Officer friends in the early 1970’s and has been stored in his gun cabinet since.
Origin: Mindanao/Malaya Philippines
Date: Late 19 Century
This original Filipino sword, known as Moro Kris is not to be confused with the Indonesian Keris, although they share superficial similarities resulting from common ancestry. A Moro Kris is a type of double-edged Filipino sword, often with a "wavy" section, similar to a Keris. Unlike the Keris however, the Moro Kris double-edged blade can be used for both cutting and thrusting.
* The wavy portion of the Kris is said to be meant to facilitate easier slashing in battle - since a straight edge tends to get stuck in the opponent's bones. This allows the Kris warrior to easily pull the weapon out of his enemies’ body.
* The double-edged blade is proportionally curved with a wave pattern etched on one side along with a very decorative “Philippines” in the middle.
* The blade is 20” long, the width reaches 2 3/4” at the guard and the overall length is 27”
* The guard was designed to replicate the wave pattern in the blade. It extends 1 1/2” from both the spine and edge of the blade. The sides sit flush with the hilt
* According to the owner, the intricately designed hilt is made of bone, horn, windshield glass and Philippine ebony with aluminum spacers. The design process was intended to replicate the colors/layers of a cockatoo
* The heavy, all silver pommel is designed to replicate the Philippine Hawk-Eagle, a formidable bird of prey and is a solid counter-balance
* The Moro Kris sword comes with its original animal hide sheath and is ambidextrous in design
Overall, this Moro Kris Sword is in very good condition despite its age. The edge needs to be sharpened but otherwise it’s ready to be appreciated immediately.
This unique and rare Filipino Moro Kris Sword is an original piece and not a reproduction. It’s a fantastic addition to any collection, and its craftsmanship is a testament to the rich history and culture of the Philippines.
